Helambu Circuit is the closest trek that lies 75 km north of Kathmandu in the Sindupalchowk district of Nepal surrounded by more than 5000m high peaks. This trek can be completed in one week starting from Sundarijal and ending at Thimbu. This trek is an easy trek and easily accessible from the Capital city of Nepal. This trek offers a dynamic experience of indigenous culture, a pleasant environment, and a view of the Himalayas.  

Hiking on the high ridges of Kathmandu through the rolling green hills and serene alpine forest with spectacular scenery leads to isolated areas of Helambu that will provide an amazing view. On your second day at Chisopani, you will have a stunning sunrise view over the chain of Himalayan peaks, as the trek progress reaching much higher areas past Gulfu Bhanjyang and Kutumsang to enter Helambu area at Tharepati, the highest point of the trek at 3,600m high offering breathtaking panorama of central Himalaya with Jugal Himal range of mountains. Fascinating villages of Tarkeghyang and Sermathang adorned with immense Buddhist culture of ancient heritage.

Himalayan Wander Walkers had prepared a short itinerary for this trek but can be done with the Langtang valley and Gosainkunda also according to the availability of your time spent in Nepal.

Outline Itinerary ( 8 Days )

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu 1,327 m and transfer to hotel.

Welcome assistance by Himalayan Wander Walkers representative at the Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to the hotel, you will meet our trekking operator for a briefing about the entire trek on this day. If your arrival is in the morning time then you can either rest or hang out around a famous tourist area in Kathmandu, Thamel. Overnight: at the hotel set with BB plan.

Day 2

Scenic drive to Sundarijal 1,463m 1 hr and trek to Chisapani 2,194m - 04 hrs.

Starting our wonderful Helambu & Jugal Himal Panorama trek with morning drive towards the east of Kathmandu valley rim, reaching Sundarijal situated 15 k.m. away from Kathmandu city. From Sundarijal our route leads to an uphill climb through farm villages, a cascade of waterfalls, and reaching the entrance of Shivapuri National Park. From here through a patch of forest and scattered farm field villages to reach Chisapani located on a ridge north of Kathmandu valley rim high hills. The air here is cooler at a height of 2,300 meters with grand views of snowcapped peak ranges from Annapurna-Manaslu-Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal extend towards Jugal Himal range including views of Kathmandu valley. This spot offers stunning sunrise and sunset views as well.
Meal: full board, three times a day.

Day 3

Trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang 2,141m - 6-7 hrs.

Early morning catch the views of the stunning sunrise over a chain of peaks, our walk leads downhill to a nice village of Patibhanjyang and then on the uphill to Thodung danda and Gulphu-Bhanjyang to reach our overnight stop at Kutumsang village, a lovely farm village with views of rolling green hills, valley, and snow-clad mountains. Meal: full board, three times a day.
Overnight: at the teahouse.

Day 4

Trek from Kutumsang to Tharepati 3,600m | 11,811ft - 06 hrs.

From Kutumsang morning walk leads to a gradual climb into pristine woodland of tall pines-fir-magnolia and Rhododendron tree reaching a wide-open green field after crossing a hilltop of Kyuola Bhanjyang at 3,280 m and slowly a short climb leads atop Tharepati at 3,600 m high with many simple lodges for an overnight stay, offering tremendous views of beautiful landscapes and snowcapped peaks.
Meal: full board, three times a day.

Day 5

Trek from Tharepati to Tarkeghyang 2,550m - 06 hrs.

Morning walk leads to a steep descend into the forested area to reach a farm village of Melamchigaon and then downhill to Melamchi Khola / river, on crossing a bridge uphill to Tarkeghyang village with views of Ganesh, Langtang, and Jugal Himal range. Tarkeghyang one of the charming village of Mid-East Himalaya, famous for wood-work and intricate carving with an orchard of delicious apples are grown around this beautiful area of Helambu. Hyalmo tribes are the main inhabitants with strong Buddhist religion similar to Sherpa and Tamang culture.
Meal: full board, three times a day.

Day 6

Trek from Tarkeghyang to Sermathang 2,693m -04 hrs walk

Enjoying overnight stop at Tarkeghyang village with its friendly locals of Hyalmo tribes, our last day walk leads on the pleasant path around unspoiled forested areas, with views of beautiful Helambu villages, the walk continues passing chortens a prayer Buddhist monuments, following the trail with superb views of rolling green hills reaching at Shermathang village for the drive back to Kathmandu, Sermathang another nice village of Hyalmo tribes with time to visit the old monastery.
Meal: full board, three times a day.
Overnight: at the teahouse.

 

Day 7

Drive from Sermathang to Kathmandu 6 hours

The bus ride with the last day on the hills of the Helambu area with excellent mountain panorama, then taking a pleasant and scenic drive downhill to Melamchi Bazaar a busy town, our drive continues to Kathmandu. After checking in to the hotel, you will have free time for some time and then you will be taken for the farewell dinner in a fine restaurant with a Nepalese cultural show.

Day 8

Final departure to Home country

We are saying goodbye as your journey to Nepal comes to an end today. If you have more time you can do some shopping or sightseeing. Approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight a representative from Himalayan Wander walkers will take you to the airport for an outbound flight back to your home country. On your way home you'll have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.

Important Information

Checklist For Helambu Trek

  • Valid passport (valid for six months from the date of your trip)
  • One other picture ID, such as driver’s license (in case of emergency and for use as a substitute of passport or in case of loss of your passport) Photocopy of passport page to carry in a wallet
  • Air tickets (Make a copy of flight tickets which may be helpful, in case of loss)
  • Visa Clearance (Make a copy of visa clearance which may be helpful, in case of emergencies)
  • MasterCard, Visa Credit, and Debit Cards are accepted in Nepal. However, traveler's cheques and some cash are highly recommended.
  • Mobile (if your cell phone is from CINGULAR USA or ATNT (USA) operators then your cell phone will  work in Nepal.)

Guiding, Food, and Lodging during trek in Nepal, all trekking supplies - Teahouse trekking means staying and eating in local lodges. We stay in single rooms where possible, but often you will have to share. The rooms are basic, normally just a bed with a pillow, blankets. A few have electric lights and all have a spacious dining room-lounge. We eat at teahouses and, although the food is usually plentiful and delicious, the menu is not extensive. They offer a variety of potatoes, rice and noodle dishes, as well as soup and seasonal vegetables. Beers and local spirits are often available, but that will be at your own cost. A variety of cereals, bread, and egg dishes are generally available for breakfast. There are also snacks available such as basic biscuits, chocolate, and soft drinks and in some areas, you will find fresh fruit in season. It is normal to meet your porter in the teahouse where you will stay overnight. So, pack your necessary things in your own day pack.

Note regarding itineraries
Although we generally adhere to the schedule, the itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, including weather and terrain conditions, suitable campsite availability, and the group's general fitness level. It is important to understand that our trek is logistically complex and it is not unusual that adjustments be made. Our guide will orient you each evening to the following day's plan; their good judgment is the key to the long history of successful treks that Himalayan Wander Walkers has led till now. Please remember that our ability to make adjustments as needed helps to ensure that your trek is successful.
