A short Trip to Kalinchowk

A short Trip to Kalinchowk

Kalinchowk has been a popular and trending place for quite some while. It is the best place to witness snowfall and to have a great snow experience near Kathmandu. So, me and my friends decided to go there to enjoy the snowfall and explore the place before our winter vacation ends. Kalinchowk is the name of the temple (Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple), located at the top of the hill at an altitude of 3842m. It is about 150 km away from Kathmandu. Before it was a challenge to reach Kalinchowk but recently a cable car has been added to help with the growing number of visitors which made it so easy for travelers. We went through the travel agency with their special package, but one can go from private vehicles or local bus.

Kalinchowk Trip Detail

The journey starts from Kathmandu, taking 5-6 hours of drive to Charikot (headquarter of Dolakha district) passing through a beautiful river (Bhotekoshi), stream, hills, mountains, waterfalls, etc. On the way, we had our lunch at Sukute beach, relaxed a bit, and continued our journey. We reached Charikot at 3 pm. Charikot is a famous trade center of the region. About 15-20 minutes from Charikot, we went to Dolakha temple surrounded by beautiful mountains and hills, a peaceful moment where we relaxed some bit, inhaling natural fresh air and listening to the sound of birds which calms us from the long drive. After some time, we returned to Charikot where comfortable accommodations were provided. As the temperature was freezing and it was getting darker, we set up a campfire. We felt warmer as we were sitting near the fire, singing, and dancing with our friends which made our night.

The next day early in the morning before sunrise, we took a private jeep to Kuri village to see the beautiful sunrise passing through a beautiful forest encountering a number of wild flora and fauna, and saw traces of snow on our way. But one can go hiking to the top of the hill or a person who comes by their private vehicle can reserve a jeep (tyre wrapped by chain). After one and a half hours off-road ride, we reached Kuri village at 6:30 am. We reached at the right time at the Kuri village to view the majestic sunrise. The warmth of the rising sun and the cool breezes from the hills welcomed us.

When we saw snow-covered hills, wooden houses, and quaint settlements, it felt so amazing. The snowy sloppy road was slippery that made us realized to wear good grip shoes. Then, we had breakfast at the Kalinchowk Country Villa. Kuri is a small village with a settlement of lodges to accommodate the tourists, which is right below the Kalinchowk hill. From Kuri, it is an hour Hike to the top of the hill (Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple). As we climbed higher, we felt the increasing altitude was making it harder to breathe. Luckily, we were all set to beat the altitude with the medication that prevents altitude sickness.

During the journey, rhododendron forests, birds, and animals can be seen. Finally, we reached our destination. Seeing the clouds floating below us, we were dumbstruck by its beauty. The destination offers the panoramic Himalayan view including Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, Gauri Shankar Himal, Jugal Himal, Shisha Pangma, and Dorje Lakpa exploring the different multi-culture and multi-caste like Tamang, Brahmin, Chhetri.

After visiting the temple and exploring the spot, we went back to Kuri. We played snow for an hour in the sloppy and slippery hills around the Kuri village. We realized that the place has potential for skiing and skating. We couldn’t help ourselves from capturing this moment. An amazing fact about this place is on a clear night, Kathmandu valley can be seen illuminating with lights. Also, the sky seems extremely beautiful at night and the stars shine bright. Then, we hopped on our jeep and returned to Charikot where we had our lunch. Finally, we returned back to Kathmandu.

Before we visited this place, I felt like this place was overrated but after visiting this place, we realized such an attractive and serene place was such a short trip away from Kathmandu. And now, I feel like this place is underrated. This place has so much tourism potential for Nepal. Every year domestic tourists, as well as international tourists, are increasing at this place. So, for those people who want to have a quick escape from the city and have a fun experience of snowfall,  Kalinchowk is the best place.
