South Gobi Desert is the most popular tourist destination in Mongolia which draws maximum tourists. About 60 to 70 percent of the total visitors of Mongolia travel to the Gobi Desert. The easiest way to do this trip is by taking a domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar to the south Gobi where you can visit maximum places within a limited time span. This tour will start from Ulaanbaatar and fly to Dalanzadgad town in the south Gobi Desert. You will experience the authentic culture and raw beauty of Mongolia. This country is hidden from the rest of the world, which was once the largest empire land in the history of the world. Unique geographical diversity, vast grasslands, roaming herdsmen riding horses, and nomadic lifestyle make travelers an abundance of discovery and exploration in Mongolia.

Outline Itinerary ( 6 Days )

Day 1

Arrival to Ulaanbaatar

On your arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, you will assistance by Himalayan Wander Walkers's representative. Our Guide and driver will help you to arrange your luggage in the vehicle and drive to the Hotel. After some rest at the hotel, we will visit Sukhbaatar square and National History Museum.

Overnight accommodation is set with BB Plan at 3* hotel.

Day 2

Fly to Dalanzadgad town & Bayanzag – famous dinosaur site

Today after your breakfast you will pick up by your guide and transfer to the airport. You will have a 1 and half hour flight to Dalanzadgad. On your arrival to Dlanzadgad, you will drive to Bayanzag (100 km – 2 hours on the dirt road). American zoologist Roy Chapman Andrews named Flaming Cliffs who discovered this place. A lot of dinosaurs’ findings such as Protoceratops & dinosaur’ eggs have been found there for the first time. The red-colored cliffs themselves are very imposing from a distance and are particularly fiery in the light of the setting sun. We will walk around the site.

Day 3

Khongoriin Els sand dunes and hike to the top of sand dunes

Today you will drive to Khongor Sand Dune (150 km – 4 hours on the dirt road). Khongor is extending from, 5 to 10 km in width, nearly 100 km long sand dune in the Gobi Desert. The sound created by moving sand can be heard from afar especially during the windy day which is known as Singing Sands. Near the Khongor River at the northern edge of the dunes, there is an oasis. We will ride camels today to explore these massive sand-dunes and explore the area where climbing one of the dunes affords the energetic traveler with an unforgettable experience of endless vistas across a sea of daffodil-colored sand.

Day 4

Yol Gorge – natural museum and drive to Dlanzadgad

Today you will drive to Yol Gorge about 5 hours drive covering 190-kilo meters distance. In the Mongolian language Yol means vulture.  The Yol gorge is located in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountain range & stretches over 10 km, completely shaded from the direct sunshine by high cliff walls. Because of the narrowest part, only 3 to 4 people can pass at a time in this Gorge. If it is in the springtime then there is a chance to see ices left on the stream from the winter. You will hike for two hours and visit the small natural museum (an optional horse ride is possible here). Then you will drive to Dalanzadgad town (50 km – 1 hour on the paved road).

Day 5

Fly back to Ulaanbaatar city

After breakfast time, you will go to the Gurvan Saikhan airfield & fly back to Ulaanbaatar (1 & 1/5 hour flight). After you landed in the city, our driver will pick you up and transfer you to your accommodation. If you drive to Ulaanbaatar then it will be 530 kilometers distance.

Day 6

Final Departure

Our team is saying goodbye as your journey to Mongolia comes to an end today. If you have more time you can do some shopping or sightseeing. Approximately 2 hours before your scheduled flight guide from Himalayan Wander walkers will take you to the airport. On your way home you'll have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful countries of Nepal, Bhutan, Mongolia, and Tibet.

Frequently Asked Question

The most important consideration for any tour is staying warm and dry, lightweight, breathable, moisture-winking under layers are highly recommended. Insulating layers and jackets are necessary. Comfortable hiking shoes, quality socks (quality socks are recommended), and head covering (insulating caps and brimmed caps designed to block sunlight) are essential. Outer layers should be made of waterproof, wind-blocking material such as Gore-Tex. Sunglasses and sun-block cream, drinking water bottles, torchlight, foot care items such as foot powder and Moleskin, insect repellent, and personal hygiene items are also necessary.
