Gobi Desert Tour is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mongolia. Gobi Desert is the second largest desert in Asia and the world’s sixth, situated in the southern region of independent Mongolia and the northern region of China. It is well mentioned in the history of the Silk Road where the significant cities are located. Gobi Desert falls under the rain shadow due to the precipitation blocking by the Tibetan Plateau.

Many travelers are lured by the impressive landscape of Gobi. Gobi desert has more to offer than what you expect from a normal desert. The national park itself is rich in wildlife such as camels, ibex, mountain sheep, wild asses, and gazelles.  

Gobi Desert tour starts and ends in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. This trip is a combination of Jeep safari and short hikes. Outline Itinerary ( 9 Days )

Day 1

Arrive in Mongolia and city tour in Ulaanbaatar

On your arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, you will assist by a Himalayan Wander Walkers representative. Our Guide and driver will help you to arrange your luggage in the vehicle and drive to the Hotel. After some rest at the hotel, we will visit Sukhbaatar square and National History Museum.

Overnight accommodation is set with BB Plan at 3* hotel.

Day 2

Drive to Baga gazriin chuluu

We’ll start our trip with a full day of driving to the Baga Gazariin Chuluu Ruins (1768 m high granite Stone Mountain in the territory of Adaatsag soum, Dundgobi province. Is another place with unique scenery that many tourists compare with lunar scenes? The mountain contains remains of old temples. And they are not only rich in minerals and crystals, but there’s also a small spring called “Eye” on top of rocks, old stone temple ruins related to the 17th century. Spend the night in a family’s spare yurt.

Day 3

Drive to Yolin Am and hike Bearded Eagle Canyon

Drive to Yoliin Am in the middle of the Gobi Desert National Park which is a strictly protected area, covering 70sq.km and the mountains here are the highest in the Gobi Desert and the rocky scenery is quite interesting, especially until mid-July while the ice in a gorge remains. And we’ll walk 3kms through a narrow valley, then 3 km back to the minivan.

Day 4

Drive to Khongoryn Els Sand dunes

After lunch, we drive to the Khongoryn Els Sand Dunes (195kms). The Khongoryn Els is some of the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in Mongolia. So, we’ll see beautiful views, huge sand dunes, and a cold-water spring with a river that leads to two small ponds. Then spend the night in a family’s spare yurt.

Day 5

Hiking in Khongoryn Els and explore the biggest sand dunes of Mongolia

Climb and hike to the top of the biggest sand dunes. There is an oasis near Khongor creek at the northern edge of the sand dune and the dunes make a sound like a plane engine on a windy day, so its name is “Singing Dunes”. Also, if you wish, you may walk alongside the creek for about 10 km. And camel riding will be arranged to the sand dunes.

Day 6

Drive to Bayan Zag and explore o the way

Drive to Bayan-Zag(150kms). When we arrive at Bayan-Zag, spend the night in the Ger. Bayan-Zag means “rich in saxaul Shrubs” is more commonly known as the “Flaming Cliffs” of Bayan-Zag, famous for the discovery of dinosaur fossils.

Day 7

Drive to Tsagaan Suvraga and exploration

In the morning, we start driving to the scarp of Tsagaan Suvarga which is located in Ulziit soum, Dundgobi province. It is interesting to see the sheer slope, facing east, which from the cliff are 30 meters high and 100 meters wide. Over thousands of years, the wind has created this amazing structure. Hiking and visiting a historical place, photo shooting, discover camel herding nomadic life.

Day 8

Drive back to Ulaanbaatar

After your breakfast, you will drive to Ulaanbaatar. Last herds of wild horses crossing the road outside our dumbfounded eyes, last yurts smoking far away, the steppe will be with us until the last moment. On arrival to Ulaanbaatar, you will check in your hotel and the rest time will be free for shopping and walking on the street.

Day 9

Final Departure

Our team is saying goodbye as your journey to Mongolia comes to an end today. If you have more time you can do some shopping or sightseeing. Approximately 2 hours before your scheduled flight guide from Himalayan Wander walkers will take you to the airport. On your way home you'll have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful countries of Nepal, Bhutan, Mongolia, and Tibet.

The most important consideration for any tour is staying warm and dry, lightweight, breathable, moisture-winking under layers are highly recommended. Insulating layers and jackets are necessary. Comfortable hiking shoes, quality socks (quality socks are recommended), and head covering (insulating caps and brimmed caps designed to block sunlight) are essential. Outer layers should be made of waterproof, wind-blocking material such as Gore-Tex. Sunglasses and sun-block cream, drinking water bottles, torchlight, foot care items such as foot powder and Moleskin, insect repellent, and personal hygiene items are also necessary.
