The Sand Mandala Jeep Tour in Upper Mustang from Kathmandu is a meaningful Himalayan journey that combines cultural discovery, spiritual experience, and scenic adventure. On this tour, you will have the unique opportunity to witness the Vajrakilaya Sand Mandala at Thubchen Monastery in Lo Manthang.

Vajrakilaya, a powerful deity in Tibetan Buddhism, is revered for his ability to cut through obstacles, dispel fear, and cleanse the negative energies that weigh heavily on our lives. Over the course of the ritual, monks pour extraordinary devotion into crafting a sand mandala of breathtaking complexity, placing millions of tiny grains of colored sand with painstaking precision to bring to life sacred geometric patterns and rich spiritual imagery. What unfolds before your eyes is far more than an act of artistic mastery; it is a living meditation, a deeply intentional practice embodying purification, protection, and the profound journey of transforming darkness into wisdom and compassion. Yet perhaps the most moving moment comes at the very end, when the completed mandala days of tireless work are ceremonially dismantled and swept away, offering a quiet but powerful reminder of life's impermanence and the boundless generosity of sharing one's merits with all beings.

Day-wise Making of Vajrakillaya Sand Mandala

The creation and destruction of a sand mandala is a profound spiritual practice symbolizing the impermanence of all things, beginning with the consecration of the site through sacred dance and prayer chants. This purification ritual prepares the ground for the intricate mandala construction that follows.

Day 01: Creation of the foundation

The first day is to collect all the Ingredients and materials of making a sand Mandala. Using traditional tools like a ruler, compass, and white ink pen, monks carefully map out the mandala's foundation by plotting a precise grid of intersecting lines, circles, and squares.

Day 02: Sand Coloring

Monks of Choede Monastery wake up at 3:00 AM for prayers in the Thubchen monastery until 7:00 AM. Then the monks will have breakfast and begin the intricate process of creating a colorful Mandala using all the required materials that were prepared on day one.

Day 03- Day 07: Chanting and Prayers

Five full days will be dedicated to prayers and chanting of the great Vajrakillaya.

Day 08: Destruction of Sand Mandala

To conclude the mandala ceremony, monks chant and play sacred instruments to invite the deities to depart, before using a specialized metal rod to scrape the sand from the outside inward. The vibrant colored grains are then swept in a spiral toward the center, gathered into a silk-wrapped urn, and ceremonially poured into a flowing river or ocean, symbolizing the release of the mandala's blessings into the world.

Date for 2026 Sand Mandala Ceremony

The Vajrakilaya Sand Mandala Ceremony is held annually according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, from the 13th to the 19th day of the 7th Tibetan month, which corresponds to August 25 through September 1, 2026.
